A Stand By Me + Budding Penships + Pet Nation Collaboration

Stand By Me’s Executive Committee Members, along with volunteers from the 3 organizations, showed up in full force to help spread the word about the Field of Sunflowers fundraising event, which brought the entire school community together!

A Garden Growing with the Spirit of Giving

Our Field of Sunflowers, inspired by the national flower of Ukraine, connected every member of the school community from the moment the grass board went up! In just a short break and lunch, Stand By Me — in collaboration with Budding Penships and Pet Nation — raised over $1200+ for funds supporting the children and families becoming refugees due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Everyone impacted by the war has a story of heartbreak and strength. Each flower, representing a unique donation, represents how we hope to extend our hands to create a voice amplifying the support for these refugees and their family members.

Kate Quach shares sunflowers with students eager to donate and place their very own sunflower on the growing field!

May is mental health month, and we’re proud that our service and therapy dogs during finals and midterms as well as our nutritional snack tables — creating our Mental Health Oasis — have spread the comfort of community and a shared support in each other through times of heightened stress and anxiety for high school students throughout the country.

OPERATION KARE-OLA:

STANDING FOR AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE!

Using Art to Create a Spirit of Giving

The Student Center is packed with students supporting Australia through Operation Kare-ola!

When my brother and I saw the countless news articles about the Australia devastation, we knew that we needed to take action. After much research, we found out that the Wildfires in Australia are estimated to now have killed or injured over a billion animals so far, ravaging through some of the most complex and crucial ecosystems in the world.

Taking inspiration from my younger sister Kate, I created a fundraiser along with Tom and called it “Operation Kare-Ola”, which draws both peer and teacher support to raise awareness and contributions to aid in Australia Wildlife and Free Relief.

Our giving tree embodies an expression of art for an impactful fundraising. As we begin, our tree is barren and stripped, just like what Australia is experiencing. However, our tree allows for every student to contribute, no matter how small or how big. Through managing our booth during breaks, I am constantly amazed and love the transformation of growth as more and more students support this good cause. With each additional new leaf - be it green, orange, red or gold - this artwork becomes a singular community effort, students and teachers united to display their empathy, kindness, and goodwill in supporting Australia.

In only 15 minutes during a school break, Stand By Me raised over $500 for WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue! The fundraiser began on Wednesday January 24th and was schedule to conclude this Friday. However, in light of recent success, our campaign has been extended to Friday, January 31st! Proceeds will go towards WIRES Australia Organization!

Operation Kare-Ola was a huge success, and we are so amazed at how our community joined together to support Australia. Thank you for helping to make an impact on the wilderness and citizens of Australia! Thank you Fr. Reese, Mrs. Levine, Ms. Merrell, Ms. Sanchez, the SI community, Pet Nation, and Stand By Me for showing up to our handing of the check ceremony! A very big THANK YOU to Australian Consul-General Mr. Nick Nichles for being our special guest of the Mission Accomplished Ceremony! Special thank yous also go to Dr. Clements and her two children, Stella and Zander, for adding the final two golden leaves onto our AUSSIE WILDLIFE GIVING TREE, which has raised over $2500 for Australian Wildlife Relief!

Our universal love for animals transcends across oceans, and our human kindness leads us to reach out and stand with other communities. Operation Kare-Ola has even touched the hearts of those as young as four years old, who have been so inspired by the Australian Wildlife Relief that they knocked on the doors of dozens of their neighbors in order to share the news of our fundraiser! A HUGE Shoutout to Stella and Zander!

Her brother, Zander (on the left), and she became so inspired and motivated by Operation Kare-Ola that they journeyed from neighbor to neighbor, knocking on their doors to raise funds for Australian Wildlife Rescue!
